Independent and Active … at 90? Join the Club
Concordia Retirement Center ‘Keeping Up’ with Nonagenarians through the ‘90 Year Club’
BELLA VISTA, Ark. (March 17, 2014) – With more Americans enjoying an active, independent lifestyle into their 90s, senior living communities such as Concordia Retirement Center are faced with a “challenge”.
“Our ninety-somethings are so active, you might say we work to keep pace with them,” said Jeff Tonack, Concordia’s executive director.
“Today, seniors in independent living after age 90 are looking for a more active level of age-appropriate recreational opportunities that reflect longer, healthier living than we were seeing even a decade ago,” Tonack said.
To meet this need, in 2007 Concordia formed a monthly gathering now known as the 90 Year Club. With monthly planned activities, independent living seniors can stay active together, enjoy quality time with friends, and celebrate longevity.
As many as 30 nonagenarians currently reside in Concordia’s independent living apartments. These include Wayne Calhoun, Betty Hughes and Jan Patterson—all three active in the 90 Year Club.
In fact, Calhoun, in the club’s spirit of active giving, is known for gathering donations from fellow residents every week—including books, clothes and furniture—loading them into his Ford Ranger, and delivering them to Helping Hands in Bentonville. He has been volunteering there for 25 years.
“The 90 Year Club is good for the members of the club and for those we visit. It brings life to them, and it keeps us sharp. We are always happy to help someone else,” Calhoun said.
Events on the 90 Year Club social calendar vary, from picnics on the front lawn, to an afternoon of games, to last year’s Easter brunch. All activities take place on Concordia’s beautiful 26-acre campus.
On Monday, March 17, the 90 Year Club will be distributing Irish-themed treat bags to their assisted-living neighbors at Concordia Arms and Concordia Catered Living, two sister facilities on-site.
“The 90 Year Club allows our active nonagenarians to stay in touch with friends who have relocated to one of Concordia’s assisted living facilities. We always have fun brainstorming our next activity,” Tonack said.
